Day 10 - Sock Drawer

Why not the whole dresser? I want to give you simple steps that you can use for decluttering most of the items in your dresser and the sock drawer is a good place to start. This way you can do one drawer at a time or if you’re feeling motivated you can tackle the whole thing!

This task is for you if…

  • you have socks in your drawer you have not worn in forever

  • you have to dig around in your drawer to find a matching pair of socks without holes

  • the drawer is so full you have to smash everything inside and close it quickly before it all comes back out

Don’t forget a before and after picture here!

  1. Dump everything from your drawer out on a flat surface.

    • You may want to check for socks that are lodged behind the drawer too. It happens to everyone, so you should check!

  2. PURGE

    • Get rid of socks that:

      • have holes in them

      • are stretched out

      • are stained (ew.)

      • don’t fit you anymore

      • don’t have a match

  3. Relocate

    • Did you find items in your drawer that are not socks? Did you find socks that belong to someone else in your family?

    • Put those things where they belong now. Don’t wait.

  4. Organize!

    • You should have already gotten rid of the socks without a match. If you skipped that step, do it now.

      1. Now sort your socks by style:

        • no-show

        • ankle

        • crew

        • knee

        • dress

        • boot

        • socks for a specific occasion or event

        • FUN socks

          • My husband has an entire drawer just for fun socks. He even has a pair with his brother’s face all over them. I’m part of the reason he has so many - they’re fun! He keeps it tidy and that’s really all that matters to me.

      2. Next, sort them by color or design.

        • If that’s just a little too “Paige” for you, I understand! Do what works for you!

        • Choose a system that will be easy to maintain.

  5. Too many of the same kind?

    • Determine how many pairs of each type of sock you need based on how often you do laundry.

    • Add a few to that number to keep & get rid of the rest.

  6. Still have too many that you aren’t ready to part with?

    • Make sure they are clean & bag them up.

    • Store them in a place you will remember.

    • You can get them out when you wear out the socks you are keeping in the drawer.

  7. Put your socks away neatly!

    • You can purchase or make dividers for your sock drawer if you want to really step up your game.

    • I don’t have dividers. I just like to stack the socks in my drawer. I don’t fold them into each other because it stretches them out too much. I stack short socks on top of each other in separate stacks in the drawer. I fold long socks by simply matching the tops of the socks together and folding them in half once. Then I stack the folded socks on top of each other in separate stacks in the drawer.

    • You don’t have to fill the drawer! It’s easier to find what you’re looking for if there is empty space.

For the most part, you can use these same steps to declutter & organize each drawer in your dresser!

Don’t forget to take an after picture!
