Day 2 - Linen Closet

Linen closets & shelves are hard to keep tidy!

They become catch-all spaces quickly if we aren’t careful.

1. Take it all out.

  • I promise this is an important step in decluttering any space. You may not think you have too many towels or sheets UNTIL you have to take each one out. When you touch every item in the closet you become more aware of the excess you are holding on to!

2. Purge the excess, old, or damaged linens.

  • Keep in mind there are a lot of people & organizations that would benefit from your gently used linens. Find a trustworthy place to donate those items you don’t need anymore!

  • Be honest with yourself when you’re purging. If you aren’t honest you won’t get very far. Do you really need seventeen sets of twin sheets when you just have one twin bed in your home? (Psst. No, you don’t!)

  • Maintaining an organized linen storage space will be much easier if you only keep what you need!

3. Do a load of laundry.

  • Do any of your linens need to be washed before you put them back in? Do it now! Please don’t put dirty linens back on the shelf.

4. Sort and organize your linens.

  • I like to organize bedding by size & towels by type and color. You choose what’s best for you.

  • Store sheet sets in corresponding pillowcases. Fold them up neatly and put inside the pillowcase. You can stack them easily now!

  • Decide how you want to fold/roll your towels and wash cloths. You want to think about what will be the easiest to maintain! Especially if you aren’t the only one putting them away every time. What’s the best option for your family?

  • Put seasonal items toward the top or back so you have easier access to your more frequently used items.

  • Keep everything else in your linen space organized by item & folded neatly!

  • If you’re going for a Pinterest look - you can use bins & baskets to sort your linens. It’s totally up to you and your space.

Still have too much stuff and not enough room? Purge again!

And then you can look into space saving bags if you still need more room!

5. Finishing Touch: Make it smell good!

  • Put a few scented dryer sheets inside your sheets and blankets or keep a bar of scented soap on a shelf! If you choose to use a bar of soap, take it out of the package and loosely wrap it in a thin piece of fabric before putting it on the shelf.

Hold on to those before and after pictures - there will be a giveaway at the end of the 31 days!
