Tip Tuesday - Turning Clutter Into Cash

FIRST THINGS FIRST - Donating your gently used items to an organization you trust & align with is always a great option! If you are local & need suggestions on where to donate items, message me! I know of several organizations that would love your donations!

Lately, I’ve had several friends ask me about selling items after decluttering, so I thought it would be a good #TipTuesday topic! As I declutter or practice the “one in=one out” rule, I frequently sell new/like new items on Facebook Marketplace or Poshmark and I keep a basket for collecting future garage sale items.

  • Determine if your items are worth the effort it takes to sell them. It does take some time and effort, but for us the amount of money we’ve made reselling things far exceeds the effort it takes to make it happen. So for us, it’s worth it!

I primarily use three methods to sell items but there are A TON of options!

  1. Facebook Marketplace

  2. Poshmark

  3. Garage Sales

I’ve used Mercari for a few items too. It just depends on your preference. Other options: EBAY, Consignment Stores, Craigslist, Amazon Marketplace, etc.

Facebook Marketplace

  • Easy to navigate, user friendly!

  • Only post clear pictures of your item & take pictures from multiple angles.

  • Be honest about any damages.

  • Be thorough in your description (include more than you think is necessary!)

  • Set a fair price.

  • Reply to comments and messages in a timely manner.

  • Renew posts as often as it will let you (every 7 days.)

  • Determine a safe location to meet up for the exchange.

  • You can also set up an option to ship your items sold on Marketplace.

Poshmark (or other online selling communities)

  • I typically only sell things here that are new with tags or have only been used a few times.

  • Easy to navigate, user friendly!

  • You do have to put a little more time into these markets if you want your items to be seen more easily.

  • Follow the same tips for posting items that I listed above for Facebook Marketplace.

  • Ship the items quickly after they sell.

  • Engage in other accounts by following & sharing their closet items!

  • If you want more help with this particular selling method - message me! I’d be happy to help you get started. Plus, you can use my code & get $10 to spend on your first purchase. CODE: PAIGESHEPARD

Garage Sales:

*If you want to have a garage sale but don’t want to do the prep work- I offer a garage sale set-up service!**

  • Clearly display items.

  • Sort into categories (kitchen, clothes, toys, electronics, etc.)

    • Not everyone does this, and I think it’s one of the reasons I always make $$$$$ with garage sales!

  • Price everything

    • Again, not everyone does this. It’s up to you…but you are reading my blog after all. 😉 This is what works for me.

  • Be kind!

  • Play music.

  • Use hand sanitizer often. (This was part of my list pre-COVID19.)

  • Make sure you’ve got plenty of change.

  • Invite other families to join in with you.

  • Advertise well. (This is another thing that contributes to a successful garage sale!)

    • MAKE LEGIBLE STURDY SIGNAGE to put up around town!

    • Use Facebook and other social media platforms to promote your garage sale.

  • Be safe!

    • Recruit family or friends to help you out!

  • When you’re done: donate what’s left or box it up for a future sale. Don’t leave it stacked around in your garage, this completely defeats the purpose of turning clutter into cash. Instead you’re turning some clutter into cash and the rest into garage clutter. DO NOT DO IT.
